World Refrigeration Day

World Refrigeration Day is an international holiday day, held annually on June 26th. The event was created to raise awareness about the importance of refrigeration technologies in everyday life and to raise the profile of the refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heat-pump sector. The date June 26th was chosen to celebrate the birth date of Lord Kelvin, who was born on June  26, 1824.

World Refrigeration Day will serve as a means of raising awareness and understanding of the significant role that the industry and its technology play in modern life and society.

The term ‘refrigeration’ here is being used in its widest sense as the process of achieving and maintaining a required temperature below that of its surroundings. An example of refrigeration is the preservation and distribution of perishable food products. Refrigeration systems are also used extensively for providing thermal comfort to human beings by means of air-conditioning. Similarly, heat-pumps are devices that take heat from one source and move it to another location.

World Refrigeration Day was the idea of refrigeration consultant Stephen Gill, former president of the Institute of Refrigeration in the UK. In October 2018, The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers pledged support for World Refrigeration Day.
